Urinary Incontinence Related to Vitamin D

..researchers reported that vitamin D levels are associated with symptoms of pelvic floor disorders. The National Institutes of health state that pelvic floor disorders will affect one-fourth of all women in the U.S. during their lifetime.

Pelvic floor disorders are caused by weakening of the muscles and connective tissue in the pelvis that are required to support the organs in the pelvis to maintain their location and function. Examples of pelvic floor disorders include urinary and anal incontinence and prolapse of pelvic organs.

The subjects included 394 women with levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D measured within one year. The women completed questionnaires including the Colorectal-Anal Distress Inventory and Incontinence Impact Questionnaire regarding symptoms related to pelvic floor disorder and quality of life at a gynecology/urogynecology office visit.

The investigators found that 51 percent of the women had vitamin D insufficiency. The researchers showed that 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels in women without pelvic floor disorder symptoms compared to levels in women with symptoms. In addition, the researchers demonstrated that questionnaire symptom scores were higher in women with vitamin D insufficiency.

The study authors concluded, "Insufficient vitamin D is associated with increased colorectal symptom distress and greater impact of urinary incontinence on quality of life.
